Urban Forests: Miyawaki Tree and Miyawaki-inspired Food Forests

Donate Here: montereycountygives.com/sustain Please make sure to specify on the form that your donation is for CSMC. CSMC is an all-volunteer organization, so the money contributed will go directly into growing forests.

Our Project: Community and student volunteers will plant a food forest in Marina and urban forests in underserved Monterey County schools and communities using the Miyawaki method. The more you give, the more mini forests we plant.

The Miyawaki Method: The Miyawaki method mimics the way a forest would grow without human intervention. Native species are planted that would grow naturally in that area. A diverse mixture of trees and various layers of vegetation are planted close together to maximize density and create balance. The planted saplings compete for the light above, causing them to shoot rapidly upward instead of sideways. For a brief description: Ted Talk

Benefits of Miyawaki forests:

  • Rapid Growth: Grow10 times faster than conventional landscaping/forestation
  • Less Water and Maintenance: Use 66% less water than lawns and significantly less water than conventional forestation; maintenance free after the first two to three years
  • Biodiversity: Generate 100% more biodiversity than conventional plantings

Thank you so much! Let’s work together to bring more nature and beauty to all of Monterey County!
