BROOM BASH
October 2025 Report

Prepared by John Mott – 11/2/2025

Program Overview
Since its inception in November 2022, the Broom Bash initiative has successfully conducted 52 events, drawing volunteers from both Marina and surrounding communities. Key sources of support include CSUMB’s Service-Learning program, the Defense Language Institute, and the Presidio.  Funding is generously provided by the Sierra Club and a local foundation.

🌿 October 2025 Recap: Two Productive Broom Bashes

Sustainable Marina proudly sponsored two energetic Broom Bash events—one at the Presidio in Monterey and another at Locke Paddon Park in Marina. Both were met with enthusiasm, teamwork, and impressive results. Here’s a closer look:

🪖 October 23: Presidio Broom Bash with the U.S. Army

At the invitation of the U.S. Army, our team joined soldiers at the Presidio Army Base during their 4:00–5:00 PM physical training for a focused broom removal effort. Armed with tools borrowed from the Bureau of Land Management, our crew—Steve, Teresa, John, Susi, and Christine—led approximately 15 soldiers in clearing a steep hillside choked with invasive broom.

Despite the challenging terrain and the need to haul debris nearly 100 yards to a dumpster, the group worked with determination and unity. A poignant moment came when the flag was lowered and the bugle sounded—every soldier snapped to attention. By the end, the dumpster was overflowing, a testament to their grit and teamwork.

🌳 October 25: Locke Paddon Park Broom Bash with Palma School & United Way/AmeriCorps

This Broom Bash combined Sustainable Marina’s regular workday with a high-energy broom bash in Locke Paddon Park. Palma School teacher Joey Silva brought a dozen middle schoolers, who joined forces with United Way/AmeriCorps volunteers from Salinas and two CSUMB service learners—nearly three dozen participants in total.

Bruce, Lisa, Al, Alan, Tim, Joey, and I helped guide the effort. The broom patches looked daunting at first, but the volunteers’ enthusiasm was contagious. In under three hours, three major infestation sites were  cleared, removing nearly all mature broom and exceeding expectations. By the end, five massive piles stood as proof of their success.

These events showcased the power of collaboration, community spirit, and hands-on stewardship. We’re grateful to all who participated and look forward to future broom bash victories!
